Excercise for health

Dr. Sara Kinnon

This time of year we are bombarded and often pressured to make resolutions to better ourselves.  New year or not, there is always a place for reflection and resolutions.  Looking back over 2010 – what were your goals and did you meet them?  What did you learn from the successes and failures?

Whether it be to eat better, lose weight, quit smoking, exercise more, or even to be more organized 2011 is your year for success!  So, we at Bellevue Natural Health Clinic want to hear from you- what are your goals?  Let us help you reach them!

When I am consulting with patients, a common health concern that comes up is the desire to lose weight and to get or stay in shape.  The number one reason I hear for not achieving these goals is time.  Nobody has time for themselves!  The answer is simple; we must make the time.  Just like you schedule your pedicures or regularly watch your favorite TV shows, you have to schedule time in for your day for you!

For myself, being physically active is mandatory.  The benefits of physical activity are hard to ignore.  Who doesn’t want to look good and feel good?  Exercise helps to maintain a strong immune system and healthy body weight, improves mood, increases energy, and decreases your chances of developing a chronic disease.  Those are reasons enough.

From the moment I get up in the morning, I am on the move.  By the time the end of the day comes along what I often want to do is crash on the couch with some good food.  The last thing I want to do is exercise!  So it is this precise time that I do exercise.  It took some playing around with to find out what time was optimal for me.  I found that with 2 dogs and my own business to run, exercising in the morning was not possible – I did not want to get up any earlier than 530am if possible!  So directly after work, I go to my local Crossfit gym.  For myself, Crossfit is the ideal exercise regime.  It is always different and always challenging, so I am never bored.  It is designed to get you stronger for everyday life – functional fitness.  It combines both cardiovascular and resistance training so I am not only working on heart and lung health, but also building and preserving muscle mass.  Being a thin female, I am at increased risk for osteoporosis so I want to do everything possible to prevent it.   Crossfit is part of that picture.  It has also made me stronger in ways that help me do other activities I enjoy – like cycling, running, and hiking with my dogs.

So let me help you achieve your goals, or even set your goals!  All this week I will be sharing our favorite tips and suggestions so check back often!
